Rain drizzled as Jenna trotted down the sidewalk and paused just in front of The Book Nook. Even from the outside, the place looked warm and inviting. New books and those written by local authors were on display in the front windows, illuminated not by cold fluorescent lights, but by a vintage lamp. The table the books rested on looked rather vintage itself, with scuff marks and ink splotches left by a previous owner. She smiled and opened the dark green door.

“Welcome to The Book Nook!” a friendly voice called out from behind a counter off to the left. “Is there anything I can help you find?”

One quick look around the place told Jenna that even if she were there solely as a customer, she wouldn’t need help finding anything. The shelves were all clearly labeled with bright signs that were easy to locate. “I’m Jenna Sorenson. I believe I may have talked to you on the phone?”

The cheery blonde extended her hand and smiled. “Yes! I’m Shana. We can have a seat right over here. Can I get you a cup of coffee?”

It was Jenna’s habit to say no, but the chilly weather had her thinking otherwise. The growing life inside her made her adjust her answer a little beyond that. “Decaf, if you have it.”

“Sure do.” Shana joined her at a small round table in the corner near a window. “I don’t think there’s a better combination than books and coffee.”

Jenna wrapped her cold fingers around the warm cup and nodded. “This is quite a cute little place you have here. I’ve only been in Carlton a couple of months, but I’m ashamed that I haven’t been here yet. I haven’t exactly been making much time for reading.” That was something she’d have to change once the baby came along. She knew an interest in books would set her child up for a lifetime of intelligence and inquisition.

“We’ve got just about anything you could want,” Shana replied, gazing around her store with a sense of wonder in her eyes. “I was glad when you called. I haven’t done much advertising for the place because I’ve always been so intimidated by it. Do I buy radio ads, or put something in the newspaper? Or do I go a different direction entirely and just stick with social media? It’s frustrating and a bit overwhelming.”

“That’s definitely something I can help with.” Jenna took another look around. Shana already had the store looking clean, organized, and welcoming. She didn’t need help in that regard. A few special promotions, the right advertising geared toward the right audience, and a little bit of luck would go a long way. “We can start by discussing what you’ve already done and how you feel about it, and then I can come up with some packages that may work for you.”

“I’m a little concerned about the cost,” Shana replied. “We don’t have a very high profit margin here.”

Jenna smiled. She liked that Shana was being so honest with her.
